Immerse in Cambridge 2019: Academic summer programmes held in Cambridge University colleges

Immerse academic programmes take place at inspiring locations across the UK, including colleges of Cambridge University, and are designed and taught by tutors from world leading universities. Participants attend from around the world, and our carefully designed curricula not only stimulate students’ intellectual curiosity and challenge their expectations in their own ability, but will also motivate and support them as they embark on decisions about their university studies, and future goals. Immerse alumni have proceeded to enrol at world leading universities, to found innovative organisations, and to become leaders in their respective fields.

Our 16-18 year old programmes are intellectually stimulating and intensive, and are designed to provide a unique taster of what it’s like to study a subject at an advanced level, building on the knowledge acquired at secondary school. Our 13-15 year old programmes are designed to ignite students’ interest and help them better understand what subjects they should be pursuing at a higher level. Choose from over thirty subject options, including Computer Science, Economics, Medicine, Law and Engineering.

Fordham University | The Jesuit University of New York

Dear Marina,

The Institute of American Language and Culture (IALC) at Fordham University is pleased to announce the Fordham Academic Preparatory Institute, running from June 4 through June 16 at our Lincoln Center campus in New York City. Targeting promising, creative and ambitious young minds, this rigorous 12-day residential program equips college-bound high school students with the cultural competence, study skills and language proficiency they need to succeed in American academic settings and beyond. Participants learn the basics of composing a personal essay, conducting research, and giving a public presentation, and are introduced to the teaching methodologies widely used in American college classrooms, including content- and project-based learning techniques. The program culminates in a mock symposium where participants gain hands-on experience engaging in academic discourse and an exclusive panel discussion and Q&A with admissions officers from Fordham and neighboring universities.

In keeping with the IALC’s ethos of experiential learning, participants in the Fordham Academic Preparatory Institute are encouraged to view learning as a process that extends beyond the classroom and into everyday life. In addition to enhancing English proficiency, living on campus in the heart of Manhattan will give participants intimate knowledge of how to thrive in a bustling, 21st-century, urban environment. Poised at the intersection of modernity and tradition and the meeting point of cultures from all over the world, New York City is an ideal experiential laboratory for intellectual inquiry in the context of language learning. For the duration of each part of the program, participants become New Yorkers, navigating the complexity of a dynamic and diverse society and reflecting deeply on the importance of fostering greater cultural understanding in today’s world.

For more program details and information about how to apply, contact Amy Evans at aamevans@fordham.edu or visit fordham.edu/esl.

UK Set To Increase Medical School Places

UK Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, is set to announce an increase in the number of UK medical schoolplaces by 25% in 2018. Currently each year there are around 6000 places in UK universities. The intake is set to increase to 7500 in 2018, with the hope of closing the doctor shortage gap within the UK.

Impact On Your Students

The additional spaces create an exciting opportunity for your students thinking about applying to UK medical schools. Demand and competition for medical school place has always been extremely high, however this is the first time in many years the supply of medical school places has been set to increase so significantly.

Early preparation will be key in taking advantage of the proposed changes. For those students who start their preparations early, this proposed change in admission places creates a huge opportunity for your students.

How Medical Projects Can Help Your Students Prepare

Medical Projects’ pre-medical courses can help focus and drive students forward to take advantage of the proposed increase in places. You may know we provide work experience, but our projects go much further to develop students.

  • Is medicine really for me? – With earlier preparation required, students need to find out if medicine really is the career they want to pursue. Our course is a great way to spend 1 or 2 weeks experiencing different departments and really working out if medicine is for them.
  • Focus – Students who have a clear goal in mind are much more likely to succeed. Work experience can really reinforce the idea of medicine as a career and provide focus and drive.
  • Personal advice – We always have current UK medical students on our courses to help provide a realistic and honest view of life at medical school. They also provide advice and guidance around the application process and personal statements.

Read about our Pre-medical Courses here.

In our library at Aquinas you will find a box will many summer programs, stop by and learn about them!
