GENERAL ITEMS FOR APPLICATIONS IN ANY COUNTRY

Study for tests:

If you’ll be taking the SAT in the Summer or Fall, study over the summer, don´t forget to register on the College Board website.

If you are taking any of the tests required for the UK or the Netherlands, make sure to check deadlines for registration.

Tour: Visit colleges when travelling or use the Virtual tours available. Most universities will have links on their pages or posted in Youtube. View the College Visits page for tips.

Understand college costs: Talk to your parents about college costs and use the online tools to calculate your “Expected Family Contribution”, the amount of money your family is expected to pay out of pocket for your college. These tools are called “EFC Calculators” or “Net Price Calculators” and can be found on every college website, or use the College Cost Calculator.

Financials for International Students: when looking for a college make sure to research if the university offers any form of aid (scholarships/ grants) to International students – not all do.

College List: Start narrowing down your college list. By the fall, you should have 6-12 colleges in your list, including 2-3 safety schools (both academic and financial safeties), 3-6 match schools, and an optional 1-3 reach schools (or 1-3 more match schools if you do not want to apply to reach schools.) This list is can be in one country or in a combination of countries.

Letters of Recommendation: If you did not request them before the end of term you must contact your teachers during the summer to give them ample time to write a letter. You must use the Student request form that you will find in maia drive.

Student questionnaire: don’ forget to complete this during the summer, it is necessary for the LOR.

Parent brag sheet: you must ask your parents to complete this for the LOR.

CV: don´t forget to update it with your summer activities, some universities will require it.


PREPARE FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Application platforms: start your accounts and complete all personal and general information.

Essay:

USA -Begin working on your Common App essays, UC Personal Statements and other supplemental writing required by each college. Remember that only one Common App essay is written and shared between all your Common App schools.

UK-Begin working on your Personal Statement, you will find great guidance in the UCAS platform. Remember to use their worksheet and read example provided in this link.

Applications: Prepare for your applications over the summer, especially if you are applying “Early” or to any UC school. Look at the online applications so that you know what to expect. Once the online applications are open, you can begin inputting your information and save it until your application is complete, reviewed, and the filing period has begun.

Counselor Report: If you’ll be applying “Early”, make an appointment with your College Counselor early in the fall to review the process and ensure you meet the deadlines.
